Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes will gain the option to challenge certain rulings from the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
