Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the scores a short while after the defender's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton stay in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

After a drab midweek display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The summer signing was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the duo dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established strikers - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

Everton: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the Premier League on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
