A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
